Standard 2: Candidates promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. Candidates are aware of major trends in children's and young adult literature and select reading materials in multiple formats to support reading for information, reading for pleasure, and reading for lifelong learning. Candidates use a variety of strategies to reinforce classroom reading instruction to address the diverse needs and interests of all readers.
Personal Philosophy: In an effort to stay up-to-date and serve the diverse needs of the learning community of Gering Public Schools the media staff is constantly evaluating the media centers and its materials. In order to properly evaluate and address the needs of the media center, a Selection Policy has been created by the media center staff. The selection policy was put into place in hopes to streamline the methods by which materials are selected, purchased, managed, removed and replaced. We would like members of the Gering Public Schools learning community to understand that great thought and consideration goes into the selection of materials for the secondary media centers. Furthermore, Gering High School library offers a strong selection of pleasure reading material both in print and eBook formats. Gering High School offers a book club that meets twice a month. Membership to the book club averages around 25 members per year.
Reflective Statement: During my time at University of Nebraska at Kearney, I was assigned an action research project that led to the purchase of eBooks. What a blessing Overdrive has been to supplement our pleasure reading program. Prior to providing this service we didn't have a summer reading check out program. Now, the program has countless possibilities. Also included in the artifacts is a copy of our Selection Policy. We put a lot of time and effort into the selection of our reading and literacy materials.
